Giving - How a Gift is Spent

How does Make-A-Wish® spend the money donated to the foundation?
80% of all the expenses go directly to program services for wish granting.

What are your sources of funding?
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of the Hudson Valley finances its work through individual contributions, corporate donations, foundation grants, planned gifts, special events initiated by the chapter and special events which are held on our behalf by individuals, organizations and schools throughout the communities of the Hudson Valley.

The Foundation also relies on in-kind contributions of goods and services to help reduce the cost of wishes. The Foundation does not do telephone or door-to-door solicitation. We are not a United Way agency, but individuals can designate all or part of their own United Way or Combined Federal Campaign payroll deductions for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Hudson Valley.

Have you ever denied a wish due to lack of funding?
NO! We are committed to granting the wish of every eligible child. Because we do not ever turn down an eligible child, we must maintain our revenues to fund all of these wishes. In-kind donations of goods and services allow us to make every dollar donated for wish granting purposes go farther.

Can we pay for a particular wish?
Yes, through our Adopt-A-Wish® program. Individuals, companies and organizations often 'adopt' a specific Wish Child's story to focus on as they plan their fund-raising project. We never release a child's last name and only the first names of children whose parents have agreed.

How much does an average wish cost?
A wish can be as simple as a tricycle and as elaborate as a trip to Rome to meet the Pope. The average cost of a wish is $6,000.

How can we help raise money?
There are many ways to help, from school and community programs, to individual and corporate gifts, to sponsoring special events. For some ideas, click here.

Is there a minimum donation?
There is no minimum donation. Every gift, no matter how large or small, is needed and will enable the organization to meet its goal of granting all eligible wishes.

What kinds of donations do you accept?
We accept gifts of cash, stock, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, real property (with some provisos), in-kind donations (goods and services), bequests, trusts and frequent flier miles.

Is my contribution tax-deductible?
Yes. The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of the Hudson Valley is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. As such, all contributions are deductible for income tax purposes to the extent permitted by the law. Our financial statements are audited annually by Grant Thornton. Please contact us to receive a copy of our audited Annual Report.
